Can Flourish Clinic help me?

While it’s challenging to make a guarantee in health care, at Flourish Clinic we believe that our knowledge base and the level of care we provide set us apart from our colleagues.

Here’s why Flourish Clinic can help

We dedicate hours each week to digging through medical literature to stay on top of the best testing and treatment options available. That’s because we love practicing alternative and Functional Medicine. It’s also why we spend most of our time and resources to become better practitioners.

Our training equips the practitioners at Flourish Clinic with a skill set not found elsewhere in Canada. For instance, Mark has studied laser therapy and acupuncture under the tutelage of medical doctors in Germany. In addition, Ali has studied massage therapy and osteopathy with Canadian experts.

Mark and Ali are two of five practitioners in Canada to have studied Functional Medicine under world-renowned experts, Chris Kresser & Dr. Tom O’Bryan.

How much will treatment at Flourish clinic cost?

It’s difficult to provide an exact amount because different people will require varying amounts of care.

However, at Flourish Clinic we are proud to be cost effective. This is why we promise not to order frivolous testing, prescribe unnecessary treatment, or do anything else that could squander your financial resources.

Flourish Clinic Visits

The number and frequency of office visits will depend on whether you are undergoing treatment through our Bloom or Root care pathways.

Specifically, for those following our Bloom care pathway, we will usually ask to see a patient once every 1-2 weeks.

In addition, patients following our Root care pathway will usually have appointments every 4-6 weeks.

Note that depending on the severity of the case, treatment length can range from two weeks to over a year.

Fee Schedule for Mark:

  • New patient Functional Medicine (75-minutes): $447.50. Please note this includes 2 hours of Health Coaching with Sheena Huculak, RN, RHN
    • Follow-up visit (30 minutes): $115
  • New patient Acupuncture & Laser Therapy (60-minutes): $133
    • Follow-up visit (45 minutes): $100

Fee Schedule for Ali:

  • New patient Massage Therapy (75-minutes): $118.75
    • Follow-up visit (60 or 90-minutes): $95 or $140
  • New patient Osteopathy (70-minutes): $156.25
    • Follow-up visit (55-minutes): $125

* All of the above prices include GST

Supplements

Please note that the cost of supplements is heavily dependent on the person. However we always opt for the most minimal and effective treatment protocols. That’s because our goal is to get you to a point where you no longer require regular use of supplements.

Lab Testing

Note that we do not have financial agreements with any of the laboratories we use for testing. In short, the labs we recommend are done so with your best interest in mind at all times. It’s important to note that the price of laboratory testing is determined solely by the company – no testing is ever marked up for our financial benefit.

The average lab test cost will be between $150-$400. New patients pursuing care under our Root pathway usually require between one and three tests to get started, depending on the case. To clarify, patients working with us under our Bloom pathway do not require lab testing.

Please note that labs located in the United States will charge in USD.

Fees for Lab Interpretation:

  • $50 per lab. This fee helps keep billing fair. Note that this fee is charged separately and not built into the cost of an appointment. Therefore those who don’t need as much lab work pay less.

Are the services at Flourish Clinic covered by my insurance?

All acupuncture, massage, and osteopathy treatments are covered by third party insurance plans. Please note that at Flourish Clinic we do not direct bill on your behalf to your insurance company. Therefore in order to receive reimbursement from your insurance company, you will need to submit your receipt to them following your treatment.

Many of our patients have been able to claim Functional Medicine visits under health spending accounts. It is important to know that although Functional Medicine practitioner Mark Volmer, R.Ac. is also a registered acupuncturist these visits cannot be claimed under acupuncture coverage.

Acupuncture, massage, and osteopathy services are only eligible to be claimed through insurance for residents of Alberta.
We will provide an itemized receipt at each office visit. On each receipt will be Mark or Ali’s registration number that can be submitted for massage, acupuncture, or osteopathy coverage.

Note that supplements and lab testing cannot be submitted under acupuncture, massage, or osteopathy. However, if your insurance plan includes a health spending account, supplements and/or lab testing can be claimed under this benefit.

How does the process of care work?

By asking our patients to complete a detailed medical history questionnaire, we separate our patients into two pathways:

Bloom
For acute care

These patients have been suffering from injuries or illness for less than three months. Examples:

  • Sports performance
  • Pain management
  • Injury rehabilitation

Note that the Bloom pathway is our expedited approach to addressing acute injury or illness. Therefore patients on this pathway seek therapy through massage, acupuncture, or osteopathy.

Root
For chronic care

These patients have been suffering from injuries or illness for longer than three months. Examples:

  • Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue
  • Adrenal Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal disorders

Our chronic care pathway is designed to uncover the Root cause of your illness. This often involves alterations to diet and lifestyle and is a thorough investigation into your health through Functional Medicine.

We understand that not everyone is in a place to make dramatic changes to their diet or lifestyle. Therefore, on a case-by-case basis, we may make concessions to treat those with chronic conditions through the Bloom pathway.

What is the Bloom pathway?

In our Bloom pathway, we expedite recovery time by first identifying the health imbalance. We then  determine which modality is best suited to your case. This can be through the use of acupuncture, massage, osteopathy, cupping, shock wave and laser therapy. As a result of stacking services we facilitate a recovery that gets you back doing what you love, fast.

Before arriving for your initial appointment, we ask you to complete an online intake form. This allows your practitioner time to review your history before the initial visit to ensure that your time together is productive and collaborative.

Your Initial Bloom Appointment

This appointment will focus on orthopedic tests to identify what muscle or body system is imbalanced. We will then treat the affected area. At the conclusion of your appointment your practitioner will recommend the most efficient way to remedy your condition including:

  • Number of visits required to alleviate your condition
  • Additional therapists recommended to visit (if applicable)
  • Spacing or duration of time between visits
  • At-home stretches, exercises, or supplements

There are two important related phenomena we see in acute pain issues:

  1. Some of your muscles or muscle groups that you use on a daily basis are not responding. This is not because they are undeveloped or weak, but rather, they simply have been “turned off”. This is often a nervous system problem, not a muscular problem.
  2. Injuries often involve the muscles/joint(s) directly or indirectly above or below the area of trauma. For example, the gluteal muscles are usually involved with knee or IT band issues; elbow issues like tennis elbow usually are related to shoulder and wrist stability issues. Therefore during treatment we look well beyond the painful issue and search for “weak” muscles further away from the problem.

Our Bloom pathway restores the normal function of muscles while addressing the site of injury with manual, shock wave or laser therapy. We have found this two-pronged approach leads to rapid improvement in our patient’s symptoms in modest amounts of time.

What does the Root pathway look like?

Treatment through the Root pathway is our systematic approach for uncovering the cause of your health problem. We often find there is more than one contributing factor to your illness.

At Flourish Clinic, we embrace a Functional Medicine approach. This includes an emphasis on a nutrient-dense, whole foods diet and focus on lifestyle factors such as stress management, sleep, and physical activity.

The way our practitioners work with patients differs considerably from the conventional massage, osteopathic or acupuncture approach you may be accustomed to.

Who are our patients?

flourish_125We treat patients with a wide range of chronic health problems including digestive disorders, chronic infections, autoimmune disease, and hypothyroidism.

Patients who do best under our care:

  • Don’t want to rely on unnecessary drugs and medical intervention for the rest of their lives;
  • Want to discover the underlying cause of their problems, rather than just suppressing symptoms;
  • Are motivated to play an active role in their own healing process;
  • Will make the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes to support their health and well-being.

How do we work with our patients?

One way to think of us is as “health detectives.” This is because we focus on identifying and addressing the underlying cause of an illness, rather than just suppressing symptoms. And like all detectives, we use a variety of tools in our investigations, including:

  • Detailed questionnaires,
  • A thorough medical history and examination,
  • Comprehensive laboratory tests (blood, urine, stool, and saliva testing).

We then use nutritional therapy, herbal medicine, supplements, stress management, detoxification, lifestyle changes, and—in some cases and only when necessary—prescription medications to eliminate triggers and restore proper function and balance.

Deep and lasting healing is only possible when the root causes of illness are addressed. Therefore by understanding the core systems of the body, how they are related, and how their function can be restored, many chronic illnesses can be prevented and even reversed.

What is our treatment philosophy?

Functional Medicine is a new model of medicine, sometimes referred to as “systems” medicine. To clarify, it is neither conventional nor alternative medicine, but a combination of the best elements of both. We believe it represents the future of medicine.

Functional Medicine is:

  • Investigative. Addresses symptoms by focusing on the underlying cause of the problem, which leads to more profound and longer lasting results.
  • Holistic. Envisions the body as an interconnected whole that is in dynamic relationship to its environment, and recognizes the importance of these connections in health and disease.
  • Safe. Treatments have mild or no side effects, and other unrelated complaints often improve spontaneously.
  • Patient-centered. Treats the patient, not the disease. Treatments are highly individualized based on patient needs.
  • Participatory. The patient is respected, empowered, educated and encouraged to play an active role in their healing process.
  • Integrative. Combines the best of both modern and traditional medicines and emphasizes importance of diet and lifestyle.
  • Restorative. Tests and treatments designed to promote optimal function, prevent and reverse disease, and improve quality of life.
  • Preventative. Guided by the ancient Chinese saying, “The superb physician treats disease before it occurs.”
  • Evidence-based. Based on the latest research from peer-reviewed medical journals, and uncorrupted by corporate and political interests.

What conditions do we treat?

In conventional medicine, there’s a doctor for every part of your body:

  • cardiologists for the heart,
  • gastroenterologists for the digestive system,
  • neurologists for the brain and nervous system,
  • podiatrists for your feet,
  • ophthalmologists for your eyes.

But in functional medicine, we see the body as an interconnected whole within a larger environment. In short, we recognize that in order to treat one part of the body, all of the other parts must also be considered.

When working with you as a patient, we take a step back and try to see common features that might link all the health conditions that you are experiencing. Therefore, by looking for the commonalities and patterns, we can offer interventions that affect multiple pathways, helping you recover your health faster and more completely.

As Functional Medicine practitioners, we are able to treat a wide variety of health problems.

Working with Mark Volmer, R.Ac

Cochrane Flourish Clinic Acupuncture MarkMark Volmer has been studying alternative medicine since 2005. He has always been fascinated with the connection between the digestive tract and chronic illness. The way that Mark works with patients differs considerably from the conventional medical or acupuncture model you may be accustomed to. Please read the following information thoroughly to familiarize yourself with his process.

Mark works with patients in two distinct ways:

  • Acupuncture & Laser Therapy
  • Functional Medicine

Acupuncture & Laser Therapy

Acupuncture and laser therapy treatments are ideal for acute injuries (less than 6 months). As a new patient, your treatment is broken into two phases:

  1. Initial consult & treatment
    • In this visit, Mark will assess and treat your injury/illness using acupuncture, laser therapy, or a combination of the two. He will also recommend a treatment frequency aligned with your own health and wellness goals.
  2. Follow-up treatments
    • Follow-up visits occur on an as-needed basis. Treatment frequency is dependent on the severity of your injury/illness and your own wellness goals.

Acupuncture & Laser Therapy Fees

Hourly rate is $133

  • Rate is prorated to time used in 15-minute increments

Initial Consult (60-minutes) : $133

  • Includes assessment and acupuncture/laser therapy treatment.

Follow-up visit (45-minutes): $100.

Functional Medicine

As a new patient, your treatment is broken into two phases:

  • Case Review
  • Ongoing Treatment

Each phase is described in more detail below.

Phase One: The Case Review

The Case Review is the first step for all new patients. To clarify, this process is designed to save money and time over the long term by performing the appropriate diagnostic testing and evaluation before treatment begins. Note that a cornerstone of our approach is “test, don’t guess.” We believe that identifying the underlying patterns contributing to disease is the key to a successful and lasting outcome.

The Case Review serves several purposes:

  1. It enables Mark to more accurately estimate how long your treatment program will last, what it will include and how much it will cost.
  2. Provides you with the chance to ask any questions you may have about your condition and what you should expect.
  3. It gives you and Mark the opportunity to get to know each other and determine if our clinic is a good fit for you.

Functional Medicine appointments do not need to be conducted in person – Mark is able to work virtually with patients by phone, Skype or Zoom.

The Case Review includes:

  • A thorough review of your medical history and relevant previous lab work (10-page limit);
  • A review of your current diet and nutritional supplements;
  • A detailed body systems assessment;
  • A 75-minute in-person consultation to review your results and present your treatment plan;
  • A treatment plan including diet, supplements, and lifestyle therapies;
  • Recommendations for further testing (if necessary).

The Case Review process includes two steps, which are described in more detail below.

Step One: Initial Consultation

Prior to this appointment, you will be emailed an online comprehensive health history intake form. Note that it is important that you spend time and energy completing this intake form as it is vital to help Mark understand your case. This form includes:

  • A detailed health and medical history questionnaire,
  • A survey of your chief complaints and most important health goals,
  • An assessment of your most troubling and frequently experienced symptoms,
  • A diet survey and questionnaire,
  • A survey of your current supplements and medications.

The initial appointment is 75 minutes, during which Mark will conduct a thorough interview. This appointment has two purposes: to make sure that he has all of the information needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of many of the factors affecting your health and to give you a head start on your treatment.

Based on your chief complaints and your history he will determine which lab tests to order for your case.

Lab Testing

The exact lab testing ordered after the Initial Consult depends on your individual circumstances, but may include:

  • A comprehensive blood chemistry panel. Note that this is the single most efficient, effective and affordable tool for quickly evaluating your health. That’s because it screens for a wide range of conditions, including several types of anemia; gut, viral and bacterial infections; insulin resistance and hypoglycemia; liver and kidney issues; and thyroid and adrenal problems. It also offers important clues as to how to structure and focus your treatment to get the best results. Finally, it provides a baseline of biomarkers to objectively track the progress of your treatment over time.
  • Additional blood tests for specific conditions, such as high cholesterol, hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease, and gluten sensitivity.
  • Advanced stool testing to screen for parasites, fungal overgrowth, bacterial infections, intestinal inflammation, dysbiosis, and a deficiency of beneficial gut bacteria.
  • Urine organic acids testing to screen for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, fungal overgrowth, problems metabolizing fat or carbohydrates, B-vitamin status, methylation issues, detoxification capacity, oxidative stress, and neurotransmitter metabolism.
  • Urine hormone testing for adrenal and sex hormone status.

Once Mark has received your lab results and completed all Case Review paperwork, you will move on to Step 2: the Case Review Consultation. Please note that this appointment typically occurs within 10-30 days after the Initial Consultation, to ensure all lab results have been received.

Step Two: In-Person Consultation

The Case Review Consultation is a 60-minute appointment. Prior to the consultation, Mark will review the results from the labs that were ordered along with your Case Review paperwork, medical history, diet and supplement survey, assessment forms, and relevant prior lab work. Therefore. when combined this information creates a Report of Findings, which is broken into three parts:

  • A summary of the underlying patterns that are contributing to your symptoms.
  • An outline of the suggested treatment plan, including dietary, supplement and lifestyle recommendations.
  • Recommendations for further testing (this will typically be minimal, if necessary at all, because of the completeness of the Case Review process).

During your consultation, Mark will present the Report of Findings as well as your treatment plan. He will also review all of your test results with you and answer any questions you have about the findings or the treatment plan.

Phase Two: Ongoing Treatment
Health Coaching

Once both steps of the Case Review are complete, you move into your two Individual Health Coaching Sessions with Sheena Huculak, RN, RHN. During this time Sheena will work closely with you and Mark to help you achieve your health goals through lifestyle and behavior modifications.

Follow-Up appointments

You will also have follow-up appointments with Mark on an as-needed basis throughout the remainder of your treatment plan.

The first follow-up appointment generally occurs between two and four weeks after your Case Review Consultation. At that time, Mark will review your progress on the treatment plan, along with any follow-up test results, and make additional recommendations as necessary.

From there, the frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend upon the severity of your condition as well as your response to the treatment.

Functional Medicine Fees

The Case Review is the fastest and most efficient way to determine the underlying causes of your health problems and design an effective treatment plan. While a Case Review costs more than a typical initial visit to a physician, it will save you money and time over the long term by performing the appropriate diagnostic testing and evaluation before treatment begins.

Below is a breakdown of the costs involved in the Case Review and follow-up visits so you can plan accordingly. Note that all of these are billed at the conclusion of the appointment.

Hourly Rate: $230

  • Rate is prorated to time used in 15-minute increments

Initial Consult: $447.50

  • Includes one 75-minute appointment with Mark, two hours of Health Coaching with Sheena Huculak, RN, RHN, and Case Review preparation.
  • Note that if you and Mark agree that you do not require Health Coaching, this cost will be deducted from your Case Review.

Case Review (60 minutes): $230

  • A 60-minute appointment that reviews the Report of Findings

Regular Follow-ups:

  • $130 for 30 minutes
  • $172.50 for 45 minutes

Lab Testing

Please note that we do not mark up lab testing. In addition, the practitioners at Flourish Clinic are not associated or affiliated with any laboratory. It is important to know that labs are recommended based on the quality of testing.

The fee for laboratory tests ordered during the case review process is typically $180- $700 depending on the complexity of the condition and level of diagnostics required. In addition the cost of some testing includes an administration and interpretation fee of $50.

Estimated Costs for Laboratory Tests for Ongoing Treatment

Ongoing lab fees vary considerably depending on the patient and treatment plan, but average approximately $100–400/month.

Supplements

The supplements Mark prescribes as part of your treatment plan will cost between $50–$400. Note that all supplements are optional and Mark will review each. As well, Flourish Clinic sells supplements as a convenience to our patients however there is no obligation to purchase the supplements we sell.

Estimated Costs for Supplements for Ongoing Treatment

Ongoing supplement fees vary considerably depending on the patient and treatment plan, but average approximately $50–$350/month.

Working with Ali Frederick, DOMP, RMT, Certified Gluten Practitioner

Cochrane Flourish Clinic OsteopathyAli has been captivated by the human body and optimal health for most of her life. With a family history full of chronic illness, and a strong drive to help others live the healthiest life possible, she has studied many avenues to best support the body’s natural capability to heal. She has found that osteopathy and visceral work are non-invasive and effective methods to approaching chronic illness and chronic pain. Alis’ practice is based on manual therapies paired with her passion for sustainable lifestyle changes. Read on to understand her approach to treatment.

Osteopathic Therapy vs. Massage Therapy

Before treatment, Ali will perform a personal assessment. This will determine whether massage therapy or osteopathy will best treat your condition. For instance, simple injuries can usually be addressed with massage. However for chronic injuries, chronic pain, and/or stomach pain, Ali will recommend an osteopathic treatment. This allows her to perform all treatment techniques she has under that scope of practice. Note that there is a separation of treatments as she belongs to two colleges with different approaches to treatment.

Phase One: The Case Review

The Case Review is the first step for all new patients. To clarify, this process is designed to save money and time over the long term by performing the appropriate diagnostic testing and evaluation before treatment begins. Note that a cornerstone of our approach is “test, don’t guess.” That’s because we believe that identifying the underlying patterns contributing to disease is the key to a successful and lasting outcome.

The Case Review serves several purposes:

  1. It enables Ali to more accurately estimate how long your treatment program will last, what it will include, and how much it will cost.
  2. You are given the chance to ask any questions you may have about your condition and what you should expect.
  3. Provides you and Ali the opportunity to get to know each other and determine if Flourish Clinic is a good fit for you.

The Case Review takes a look at:

  • Medical history,
  • Current diet and nutritional supplements,
  • Structural body assessment.

It consists of a 75-minute in-person consultation to review your results and present your treatment plan. This treatment plan includes diet, lifestyle therapies, and personalized referrals.

Step One: Initial Consultation

Prior to this appointment, you will be emailed an online comprehensive health history intake form. Note that it is important to spend time and energy completing this intake form, as it is vital to help Ali understand your case. This form includes:

  • A detailed health and medical history questionnaire
  • A survey of your chief complaints and most important health goals
  • An assessment of your most troubling and frequently experienced symptoms
  • Your current supplements and medications, and self-care regimen

The initial appointment is 75 minutes, during which Ali will conduct an in-person interview and thoroughly assess your structural health. Note that the structural assessment will include affected (painful) and unaffected structural health. This is because the appointment has two purposes: to make sure that she has all of the information needed to gain a comprehensive understanding of many of the factors affecting your health and to begin your treatment.

Based on your chief complaints and your history she will determine the most effective and efficient treatment plan, which therapy she will use, and recommendations for referrals.

Referrals

As a manual therapist, Ali knows that structural issues or injuries are not the only cause of pain. In fact, more than 60% of Ali’s chronic pain clients experience incredible results from the investigation of lifestyle influences and gut function on their health. Because of this, Ali has an extensive referral network to ensure you’re receiving the essential care to properly heal and achieve your optimal energy. Note that she will go through these at your Case Review Consultation, within 1-4 weeks of the Initial Consultation.

Step Two: Case Review Consultation

The Case Review Consultation is a 60-90 minute in-person appointment. Prior to the consultation, Ali will research your presenting symptoms, medical history, diet and supplement survey, and assessment forms. Then together his information creates a Report of Findings, which is made up of three parts:

  • A summary of the underlying patterns that are contributing to your symptoms;
  • An outline of the suggested treatment plan, including dietary, lifestyle recommendations, and referrals;
  • Recommendations for further appointments.

During your consultation, Ali will present the Report of Findings as well as your treatment plan. She will also answer any questions you have about the findings or the treatment plan.

Phase Two: Ongoing Treatment

Once both steps of the Case Review are complete, you will have follow-up appointments on an as-needed basis throughout the remainder of your treatment plan. At this time, Ali will recommend osteopathic or massage-based treatments.

The follow-ups will be 1-8 weeks apart. Note that depending on the amount of treatment required in each session, they will vary between 60, 75, or 90 minutes in length.

From there, the frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend upon the severity of your condition as well as your response to the treatment.

Fees

The Case Review is the fastest and most efficient way to determine the underlying cause of your health problems and design an effective treatment plan. To clarify, it will save you money and time over the long term by performing the appropriate evaluation before treatment begins.
